The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman meeting with political party leaders is a common occurrence in Nigeria, as the commission is responsible for conducting elections and ensuring their fairness and transparency. The chairman of INEC often meets with leaders of political parties to discuss various matters related to the electoral process, such as the timing and logistics of elections, voter education and outreach, and the handling of disputes and complaints.
These meetings are important for ensuring that all political parties have a voice and a fair shot in the electoral process. They also help INEC to understand the concerns and needs of the political parties, which can inform its decision-making and help to build trust and credibility with all stakeholders. Overall, the INEC Chairman’s meetings with political party leaders are an important part of maintaining a level playing field in Nigerian elections and ensuring that they are free, fair, and credible.
The meeting is taking place at the INEC Conference Room in Abuja, exactly 12 days before the presidential and National Assembly elections.
The INEC chief urged parties to ensure that only accredited party agents are allowed into the polling areas, and only those with INEC ID cards would be allowed.
He also appealed to them to call their candidates and supporters to order owing to violent attacks that have been recorded in some of the campaigns.
The meeting is to bring the political parties up to speed with all the preparations for the elections and to remind the parties about their obligations.
